Updates to Profile and Showing Real Names Across the Site
We’re about to make some improvements that we wanted you to know about.
Over the past few months we’ve added to and enhanced quite a few social features on the site, including groups, contests, networks, friends, and we’re about to make improvements to our member profiles.
These features all make the site more fun, and enable better collaboration and competition. But they work better when members can find each other.
As part of these changes, we’ve decided to require and show real names. We’re also going to show real names across the site by default. You’ll be able to turn this off with the profile settings.

I’m almost sure somebody has a good excuse for this change. I’m not happy about it, & it’s becoming a trend across many web-sites. There’s just too many wackos on this planet. If Cramer on CNBC wants to play class-clown & draw these crazies from the woodwork, thats one thing [recently on his program he vaguely mentions something about his local state police & a non-fan *or is that former fan?* LOL] Frankly, I suspect this is gonna cause problems for somebody in the long-run, & management will claim the same thing Pontius Pilate did, “we aren’t responsible blah-blah woof-woof”… Can I assume thats what the pop-up blocker blocked [rather than somebodys poorly written ad?] an announcement of this change? If so, is that gonna be the same care thats used to protect members information? I hope you’ll forgive my skeptisism, but after the following “security” issues, that has released my personal info, I hope you’ll understand my concerns:
The VA [not once BUT TWICE since I was registered in 2 different regions!]
TJ MAXX [sniffer used on wireless network used to tie the cash registers to the office]
DSW Shoes [network breach, heck of a price for discounted shoes]
& finally I forget the name of the “agregator” that had a “breach” a couple of weeks back, they wont list the companies involved *I’m sure you can figure out why*!
Back in the 80’s [pre-internet days] a relative got hold of my SSN, on my record were the following:
Apartment, U-Haul, Equitable Gas, Duqesne Light, Cable company, I gave up after that!
But you get the message, when did the Total Information Awareness Network become the New American Standard?
Granted, it’s alot of work to track somebody over the ‘net, but it can be done already. So why does every company want to make the job easier???

Thanks for the feedback. You will still be able to choose to hide your real name.

I deplore this sort of policy, I encourage that you change the policy to not opt out but to an opt in one. If I choose to show my name, I can go into my account settings and enable that. This should be clear and not the other way around. I’m currently looking into the TOS in which I signed earlier and am pursing my legal options.
