Worried about trade prices? We can help!

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Sorry about the trading issues that you have had to deal with over the past few days. We understand how frustrating they have been for you, especially for the traders in the Community.

I want to let you know how I can help you if you entered a trade and believe that it did not execute at the correct price. I can manually change the price entries in our system for you to make them right again. Send me an email at brendan@updown.com with a specific list of the symbol, number of shares, incorrect price, and correct price of each trade you feel is wrong. Unfortunately, I cannot enter a trade that you said that you intended to make, but I can make sure that the prices at which your trades executed were correct.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Final Update on Trading Issues

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Trading is back up and running for all users and portfolios are accurate.

For some of you we had to roll your portfolio back to its holdings as of Friday afternoon. You may need to go back in and execute some trades you made late in the day Friday.

Thanks for your patience during this issue. We’ll work to make sure this does not happen again.

UPDATED: Data Issues Affecting Portfolios, Contests, and Trading

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Well, we managed to fix the trades that were placed on bad quote data, but in the process, many users ended up with excess cash in their accounts.

Until we can fix this issue, we’re going to halt trading for only those users with the cash issues, so that they do not trade with it.

Obviously, having extra cash in a portfolio improves performace numbers, which is why you see members in contests and the site in general with much higher gains than usual.

Please e-mail me directly if you have any questions about his issue: joe@updown.com.

Data Issues Affecting Portfolios, Contests, and Trading

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Some of you may have noticed problems on the site starting at about 2:00 p.m. ET on Friday, October 16. We received incorrect quote data, and this was applied to trades, portfolio gain/loss calculations, and contest standings.

We have turned trading back on. Trades will all be executed at correct prices, but we will not be able to reflect this on the site until the problem is fixed.

Also, performance, gain/loss, contest standings, and other portfolio related calculations will be incorrect.

We’re working to fix this problem as quickly as possible.

Final Note on Last Week

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Sorry about the trading issues that all of you had to deal with last week.  Basically, for months we have had stable trading because we upgraded our infrastructure to get data directly from the exchanges.  This was working well until Thursday when our servers were overwhelmed with massive and historic trading volume for that day.  On Thursday the market volume was 2.5 times the usual volume.  This volume was the highest in years and perhaps the highest in the entire history of the market.

Because of massive trading volumes, our server processed trades 2 hours behind schedule.  Earlier in the week, we actually saw this coming and ordered new servers on Tuesday to increase our capacity but we couldn’t get the servers up in time to process the trades for Thursday.  Luckily, we get the new servers on Thursday night and trades were processed normally on Friday.  The site should be back to normal from now on.

Important Notice

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

We are having problems with our trading system.

All trades will be executed properly, but may take hours to show up on the site.

Please do not cancel trades in order to have them placed. This will just cause your trade to execute at a new price and for the trade to take even longer to go through.

Also, we do not recommend any day trading strategies until we clear up this problem.

We hope to have this problem resolved by the end of the day.

Sorry about this.

Pending Trades Issues

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Hi Everyone,

As I’m sure you have noticed, our trading system is running behind. Your trades are pending and executing much later than they should. Delays like this happen most often in the first or last few minutes of trading when we have a ton of orders at once, just like we did yesterday following Black Monday on Wall Street.

These delays are inexcusable and we are working as hard as we can to fix them. In the meantime, please keep in mind that even if the system is delayed, your trade still executes at the correct price, and canceling and re-entering trades will only delay your trade further.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Brendan

LCC Glitch

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Unfortunately for all of the long LCC holders in the Community, the stock’s jump from about $9 to $999.99 this afternoon was just a data glitch, not a miraculous breakthrough for UAL Corp.

We’re fixing the problem now!

Notifications Bug

Friday, August 8th, 2008

We have found a bug in our system that prevents you from receiving email notifications when you ask for them. We are working on it now.

If you continue to have problems, please let us know!

Restart Scare

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

e want to assure everyone that we have not restarted all portfolios on UpDown. As part of our deployment of several upgrades this morning, every portfolio displayed a value of $1,000,000 for a short time. That time has now ended, so everything is right again!

What do you think of the new look of the home page?
